What Happens to the Neck in a Whiplash Injury
In a typical rear-end collision, the entire cervical spine event occurs in approximately 150–300 milliseconds — faster than the human startle reflex. The torso accelerates forward; the head stays in place due to inertia while the lower cervical spine is driven into hyperextension; this creates an S-shaped cervical deformation exceeding normal physiological range; then a rebound flexion phase follows. These forces stretch and tear cervical muscles, ligaments, facet joint capsules, and intervertebral discs — without any fracture visible on standard X-ray.
Why Symptoms Are Often Delayed
Adrenaline and endorphins during the acute accident suppress pain for hours — sometimes days. Inflammatory cytokines that sensitize pain receptors accumulate over 24–72 hours. This is why many accident victims feel "fine" immediately, only to wake up the next morning with severe neck stiffness and headaches. The delay does not mean the injury is less real — it is a normal physiological response to soft tissue trauma.

- Neck pain and stiffness — often worse the day after
